The One With Nothing
What do I have
To give?
Except this
That no one may
Go without
Something.
Rain
 The bird gets drenched
 When it rains’
 The river overflows.
 The earth is soaked
 When it rains
 But for man
 When it rains,
 It is hard
 To get drenched,
 Hard to overflow.
 Man knows
 How to escape.
Faith
 I asked the bird,
 ‘The sky is vast,
 Are you not afraid
 Of getting lost?’
 The bird said,
 ‘I Know how to return
 To my own perch.’
Nest
 I have watched the bird
 Make its nest.
 I have watched the bird
 Gather grain and then
fly away far in the sky.
I wish the bird would teach me
 How to remain
 Connected to the earth
 While in flight, and
 How to keep alive
 A sense of the sky,
 While in the nest.
GOD
 I asked a child,
 ‘How big is God?’
 The child smiled
 And stretched both
 His arms wide.
The child wanted me to learn
 The vastness of God,
 And then I knew
That God is only as big
 As your own life’s grasp.
Masks
 To scare our children
 We made some scary
 Masks.
 The children were frightened
 For a while.
When they got wise about the masks,
 They smiled.
 The children are
 No longer small.
 They frighten us now
 Wearing our masks.
Flight
 The bird called the river
 As it flew above it.
 The river smiled
 And said,’Speak, Bird.’
 The bird flew higher.
 Flying above the cliff
 The bird called.
 The cliff said softly,
 ‘Speak, Bird.’
 The bird
 Flew higher and higher.
 Its voice got lost.
 The bird has returned now
 To say,
 Fly only as high
 As the reach of
 Your own call.’
Offering
 The Sun said,
 ‘Open your door.
 My light is yours.’
 The trees said,
 ‘Sit near us.
 Our shade is yours.’
 The river said,
 ‘Come close and
 Touch me. My flowing
 Water is yours.’
 I did what they bid
 Me to do.
 Now the light is mine.
 The shade is mine.
 The river of my life
 Flows on smoothly.
Man you are Great
 I said to the sky,
 ‘You are so high!’
 The sky smiled
And said,’you are higher than me.’
 I said to the sea,
 ‘You are so deep.’
The sea swelled up and said,
 ‘You are deeper than me.’
 I said to the Sun,
 ‘Dear Sun’
 You are so bright.’
 The Sun laughed and said,
 ‘You are many times
 Brighter than me.’
 I said to man,
 ‘Man, you are great.’
 Man said without
 Hesitation,
 ‘You are so right.’
Division
 The sky belongs
 To everyone,but
 Walls? They are our own.
 The river is for all.
 But vessels
 Are our own.
 The earth is for everyone.
 But courtyards
 Are our own.
 This limitless world
 Is for all. But boundries
 Are our own.
Paths
 Bird, the entire sky
 Is yours. Each time
 You fly you make
Your own path. Then you travel
From one end of the horizon
To the other singing all the while.
 But the world gets lost,
 Or is ruined,
 Or loses itself
 Travelling the paths
 It made for itself.
 Your path, Bird, however,
 Is always defined.
 In using it
 You leave the sky pristine.
Emptiness
 A bird alighted;
 Near it another bird
 Came and sang.
 The entire sky
 Resounded with the birds’ singing.
It’s man only who could not fill
 His life’s emptiness
 With mutual mild talk.
Detached
 The bird knows
 How to gather twigs
 For its nest.It knows
 How to raise its
 Younglings.
 When the younglings
 Grow up
 They make their separate
 Nests.
 The bird does not mind.
 It accepts its aloneness.
 The bird does not complain
 To anybody.
The bird forgets all the past
 Moments of crisis.
 It remembers
 Its own songs only.
 It remembers singing;
 And flying in the sky.
 The bird only remembers
 How to be a bird.
Soulfulness
 Life is endless
If it is like the sky.
 Life is dense shade
If it is like a tree.
If it is like the sun,
 Then life is light.
 Each moment is ecstacy
 If life has soulfulness
 In it.
Home
Bird, when you come to my house,
 Your coming
 Makes me like my house.
 Bird, I like you making
 Your home
 In my house.
I know, Bird, you do not come
 To my house
 But to your own.
But in coming to your own home
 I like your coming
 To my house.
 Bird, your making your home
 In my house,
 Makes my house
 So much my home.
In Search of meaning
 Often I thought that
I would listen to the birds
 When they sing at dawn.
 That I would
 Watch the rising Sun,
Watch the flawer as it blossoms,
 Watch the river’s liveliness
 As it flows by.
And I thought I would sit
Under a tree on a rock
And go deep in my own soul.
 But lost in the darkness
 Of my own dark mind,
 Lost in the distresses sounds
 Of my own mean life,
 Lost in the fetters
 Of my own making,
 I am looking still
 For that morning.
Habit
 The bird
 Flying high in the sky,
 And nature
 Vast in its spontaneity,
 No longer
 Inspire us.
The tree swaying with the wind,
 Bending low with its
 Flower and fruit blessings,
 No longer thrills us.
 We are not impressed also,
 By anyone’s
 Uprightness
 Or honesty.
 I think, we no longer
 Wish to change
 Our set habits.
Painting
 He said,’Please
 Paint a canvas
 With borers of the sky;
 A sea endless
 In its own making;
 A tree that gives away
 With both hands
 Its tree-life;also
 A bird filling the sky
 With its own swet singing.
 Please do make
 A painting of life
 Linking the universe
 Of life’s heartbeat.
Giving
 The bird took
Only as much as its beak
 Could hold;
 It swallowed only
As much as it could drink.
Thus the grain in the field,
 The water in the sea,
 Remained enough and plenty.
 The bird made its nest
 Only as big
 As its own body.
 The world remained so big
 And wide.
 The bird sang a song
 Each day
 A song that
 Filled the earth
 And the sky.
 The bird taught us;
 Take less
 And give plenty.
Mirror Holder
Whenever I cried
My mother held up
A mirror and said,
‘Look,this is how you look
When you weep.’
I laughed then,
Imagining my
Weepy face without even
Glancing at the mirror.
Mother too cried once
When her mother died.
After that my mother
Did not laugh as she used to
Till she died.
Perhaps there was no one
To hand a mirror to my mother.
Perhaps we lose
One by one,those who
Show us our face
By holding up a mirror.
Relationship
 The river banks are forged
 When a river flows.
 When river changes its course,
The river banks too are changed.
 When the river overflows,
The banks drown in the flow.
When the river reaches the sea,
 The banks are left behind.
 I suppose, relationship are fulfilling
 Only when they help
 Our life to flow.
Bird
I watch the bird as it comes
Each day;
I know its not the same bird
Which comes each day.
Yet how should I say
That this bird
Is a different bird!
I am glad
I did not name the bird.
Now the bird is
Just a bird.
Anguish
The house got divided.
The land and other property too
Got divided.
Even the mango grove
And the well got divided.
Now I have my sky
On my side,
And he has his sky
On his side.
It’s not a question
Of who got more
And who was cheated.
My anguish is
About myself being
Divided.
White on White
I told him many a times
To not write on white paper
 With white ink.
 ‘Who would read it
 If you write like this?’
He said,’what matters is that you write.
 It matters not
If no one can see it.
 In any case, to write
 Black on white
 Seems like impropriety.
 White demands white.
Then no matter how much you write,
 The surface
 Remains white.’
Play
 I saw
 Under a tree
 On dry leave, birds playing
 And listening
 To the music
 Of their own footfall.
 They seemed so happy
 As they looked about;
 So much in love
With the sound of their own making.
 I realized
That all we do on the world-stage
 Is only this:
 To hear the echoes
 Of our own voices,
 And remain oblivious
 To everything else.
Practice
 I have to learn
 To walk even more
 Lightly,
 Because, I can hear still
 The sound of my own
 Trudging feet.
Destination
As I start on my journey
 People ask,
 How far shall you walk
 This time? And where to?
 I smile and move on.
 How should I tell them
 That this time
 I walk
 Towards myself only?
First Step
I have unlocked
all the doors.
Out in the open,
this is my first step
to enter
my own inner self.
Giver
He did now save
anything.
People say,he did not leave
even a set of clothing.
He gave away what he had
all through his life .
By giving, he collected
every one around him.
A Feeling
There is only emptiness
And more emptiness
As I look farther
And farther.
When I come nearer,
I am more and more
Fulfilled.

I Do Not Ask
Sometimes I wish to ask you
Like a mere child,
‘Please tell me,
Who gives to the sun
Its light?
Who brings so much blueness
To the sky?
Who keeps
The ocean
Filled to the brim?’
But I do not ask.
I am afraid
That you may laugh
And say,
‘You are no longer a child.’
And silence me.

Bird On the Glass Chandelier
The bird looks
So innocent and elegant
Sitting on the delicate
Glass of the chandelier.
I fear, however
That the glass may break
And the bird will
Fly away.
Why Did I wish
Today, the bird
Looked at me intently,
Then suddenly
Flew away in fright.
I was sad when I realized
That I had wished
For a cage
To hold the bird in.

Competition
The day I wished
To be god,
I knew that someone
Now surely would want
To be larger than god.
Now everyone
Is larger than god.
No one is god.

False truth
So many truths
Of our childhood
Seem false when we
Grow up.
Do we really
Turn all truths
Into falsehood
As we grow tall?
